Untouchables

Untouchables (or Outside) – a group formed from local tribes that had not been accepted by the Ariyans the conquerors as part of their society and the varna system. Untouchables did all the unskilled labor that could have defiled the members of the varna system. They were leatherworkers, cleaners, etc. Untouchables were not allowed to come close to the houses of other people or communicate with them. In XX century Mahatma Gandi and Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar began to fight for the rights of Untouchables. Nowadays the Constitution of India considers such a discrimination as a criminal offense.
